Campaign Finance Reform

Our members of Congress spend too much time fundraising instead of representing us.

Our members of Congress spend too much time fundraising instead of representing us. The U. S. House weekly allows days out of session for members to devote to fundraising. The impact of big money donors has corrupted our political process. Dynamic and real reform is needed.

I support the enactment of the “Fair Elections Now Act.” “Fair Elections Now” is the name of a bill in the U. S. Senate (S. 1538), with a companion bill that has previously been introduced in the U. S. House. (H.R. 1826). The proposed law would implement public financing of congressional campaigns to match local small dollar contributions raised by a candidate in his or her state. The matching federal dollars would come from a small fee on large government contractors for U. S. Senate races and from a small part of revenues raised through the auction of unused broadcast spectrum for U. S. House races.

I support the enactment of the “Fair Elections Now Act”.

If enacted, the bill can dramatically reduce the influence of big money and special interest groups in our elections process. It would empower voters and make it easier for citizens to run for office without the benefit of big money benefactors.

We also need campaign finance reform of our presidential elections.

We also need campaign finance reform of our presidential elections. Our republic suffers from the outsized role of a few large, mega-wealthy financial contributors able to influence elections and public policy through their financial contributions. In the wake of the U. S. Supreme Court decision in the “Citizens United” case, the abuse of 501(c)(4) corporations, and other shadowy methods, a handful of wealthy people wield too much influence in our political process, drowning out the voices of average citizens. This is wrong and reform must become an urgent priority for Congress.
